I deeply miss Fr. Leon Inverso who was a wonderful priest who always went above and beyond for all his parishoners. I will be ever grateful that our good Lord sent him to St. Agnes Church in Atlantic Highlands to serve us. I was so impressed from the first moment I met Fr. Lee as a gentle, holy, caring individual who made time for you when you you needed him the most. He arrived at St. Agnes on July 1, 1995 as our temporary administrator. That Fall for the Thanksgiving holiday he sacrificed time with his beloved family to spend it with his new parish family by opening up the doors of the school cafeteria to offer a proper Thanksgiving meal to those who would otherwise be alone. Fr. Lee served all present. That to me is what a priest is all about- to serve and not to be served. I knew right then and there that this is the kind of Pastor St. Agnes needed. Our prayers were answered when Bishop Reiss made the wonderful decision to appoint Fr. Inverso as our new pastor. He set out right away returning spirituality and holiness to the parish community of St. Agnes. I worked for Fr. Lee in the parish office and saw firsthand his love and devotion to God and all His holy people.
May his gentle soul rest in the peace of God’s Kingdom.

My most memorable recollection of Father Lee's priestly work was in the confessional box. Focusing on the penitent's literal words and their implied meaning, Father Lee offered advice, encouragement, and the flow of God's mercy--and did all of that in a dignified manner which made the Sacrament of Reconciliation such a positive experience. He will be missed.

Fr. Leon who grew up with our family the Derricos too was always at my Aunt Connies and Uncle Reds house as we grew up and shared many meals there. He was a fun loving and happy person who turned out to be a wonderful priest. He recently did my mother's funeral service here and his homily was so touching loving and genuine and gave us such comfort. He will be missed by all who he touched.

Father Leo baptized my daughter in the hospital the day she was born. I was so scared my baby was born in fetal distress. I knocked on the church door early that morning told him of the situation he dropped everything and came to my family’s aide. He was supposed to lead daily mass instead he came to our aid. He did however leave word of our situation and the St Agnes fh3jjcongregation started a prayer vigil for my daughter. Almost 23 years have passed since that day. My child recovered fully. But I am so greatful for him having been there for us and the prayers meant for our daughter. St Peter you got a good onecoming to you. God bless you father Leo. Rest In Peace.

I remember Leon from many years before he became a priest. He was a good friend, a great dancer, and good fun. I saw him seldom in the years afterwards, but have fond memories of those early years, shared with his cousin Loretta, his friends Thom, Tony, Reynald and Henry.
I hope he has found peace.

Dear Father Lee, From the first sermon that I listened to I knew you were special. You brought God and his love to the congregation, but with a very human voice. You always seemed to understand what life was like for those of us who weren't ordained. You counseled my husband and I as we prepared to marry. You were the first priest that David ever really talked with and you completely amazed him with your down to earth compassion and understanding. Unfortunately, you were called to another parish and couldn't perform our wedding, but you made the effort to be there when our son was baptized. I always wished and prayed that you'd be brought back to Incarnation while the school was there because you were exactly what was needed to inspire and encourage our kids to be good people. I thank you for being there for us and only wish that I'd known you were back living close by again so that I could have been there for you. God has truly called up another angel. God bless you, Father Lee.

My Dear Cousin Leo,
We were born a month apart in the same year and shared our cribs with one another. We continued that close relationship through childhood and have such a fond memories of when Aunt Jessie took us (you, me and Gregory) to see Song of the South and grandpa took us all out dinner whenever my family traveled from Brooklyn to Trenton to visit.
I remember the Christmas the three of us slept in the attic and Gregory fell asleep but you and I heard Santa's sleigh bells and were so excited we woke him up. Our relationship continued through high school and college when you would bring your college friends to Brooklyn to stay with us and I would travel to Trenton to go to the Seton Hall dances. We kept in touch when you were teaching in Georgia.
Then you were ordained and my family (Bill, Sean, Andrea, Kristin and Lauren) attended your ordination. We were so happy for you. You attended my girls marriages and read a prayer. I also have the memory of our cruise to Alaska when we had so much fun and my brother Frankie joined us with a couple of your friends.
Blood made us family but love made us friends.
I will not miss you because you are always with me.
Your loving cousin,
Angela

A photo of Leo doing a reading at my wedding ceremony in June, 2011 on Long Island. As selfless as ever, he trekked from New Jersey to be there for me on my special day. Leo was our cousin, who happened to also be a priest. I remember his ordination like it was yesterday, even though I was only 12 at the time. Having a priest in the family has always been a blessing. It was such a comfort having him there at family occasions, weddings, funerals...where his words were always genuinely heart-felt. Whenever I saw him, he would bless me and it was very special because I came from him. He's a beautiful man who will be dearly missed.

Today the world has lost a very good man. Father Leonardo Inverso was much more than just someone I knew. He was a part of our family. I met father Lee as a small boy in the 5th grade while going to incarnation catholic school. Ever since we met he’s had a connection to me and my family. On Friday mornings the whole school would have to attend a mass. All the kids always hoped father Lee would be celebrating the mass because he had the best stories and always kept us entertained. He has been there for birthdays, graduations, holidays and especially Christmas Eve! There was never a Christmas Eve that he was not at our table. He was there for many bad times as well. Whenever I was going through a hard time he would be the first person to call and talk to me. This past Christmas Eve he was in the hospital and it didn’t seem the same around the dinner table without him. I made sure to call him and talk to him. I think he knew his time was near. He told me “enjoy every holiday because you don’t know when it’s your last and be the best person you can be every day.” Father Lee I promise to live up to those words. I can never thank you enough for being in my life. I am and always will be a better man for having you in my life and part of our family. Thank you for all the memories and adventures. I’m gonna miss saying “Father Lee! You crazy little holy man!” Every time I saw that face. Heaven has gained another angel to help in the fight against Cancer. We are going to miss you so very much!

My grandmother, Margaret Carmignani, Leo's aunt and devout Catholic, always went to church and lit candles while there. It meant a lot to her. I was so happy when Grandma would let me light one with her. Back then, they still used real candles and I can recall the scent. I light this candle for both Leo and Grandma. I miss and love them both. I find comfort in knowing they are both at peace and together again.

I was very honored to have Leo get up at my wedding and say some words. It meant a lot to my wife and myself. The last time I saw Leo, we had lunch along side my mother in law and my wife. I could see the love he had for his family as he playfully bantered with my mother in law and my wife. He was always caring and always so giving. At the long term care facility, I heard so many wonderful stories of how Leo had helped them. I also saw where he lived and spoke with some of the people people he worked with. I could see how much they respected and cared for him. He was a good kind and generous man. I was honored to know him and wish I had more time to get to know him better. He maybe gone but he will not be forgotten.
Love Gary

Dear Leo,
Thank you for all of the tender love you have shown me since the day I was born. I have one specific memory walking alone in the garden in Ronkonkoma as a child. The words have long since faded but the feeling hasn"t. You always made me feel special like I was the only one in the world.
My favorite memory will be all of our family together dancing, eating, and laughing at my wedding. Thank you for driving all the way out to Long Island with Aunt Evelyn. I know it wasn't easy for you to travel but I also knew you would be there no matter what to say a prayer for us. I want you to know when I celebrate my 10th anniversary in July there will be a birthday cake for you. The picture of you holding me close while we danced will be my most treasured possession.
It was my honor to be by your side. It was a gift to meet all of the people who love and care for you with such a fierce devotion. It was gift to be the recipient of each and every story shared. I'm so impressed with you, Father Lee. Well done!
Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to love and care for me. I will always hear you whispering to me, "You're my favorite!"
I love you!
Kristin
